Institute of Catalysis - BAS

The Institute of Catalysis - BAS (IC) is created 1983 on the basis of Laboratory of Kinetics and Catalysis, started earlier in 1963.

IC is a leading scientific, applied and innovation center and expert in the education of specialists in Bulgaria and Southeast Europe in the field of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, chemical kinetics, stabilization and specific research methods for application in catalysis.

The scientific staff of IC is formed by 4 professors, 16 assistant professors, 13 senior assistants and 3 assistants.

According to the Regulations of the constitution and activities of IC, the main fields of activity are: „Fundamental and applied research in the respective field, education of qualified specialists and doctor fellows etc. ”

The structure of IC consists of 3 laboratories and 11 tematic groups working on theory and practice of catalysis, creation of catalysts and catalytic processes, study of kinetics and mechanism and creation of models of catalytic processes and elementary acts, elaboration and implementation of technologies for production of catalysts. A trend in the activity of IC is obtaining and characterization of novel nano-materials applicable in catalytic processes, removal of toxic organic compounds from industrial emissions, hydrodesulfonization and hydrodenitrogenization of oil fractions for ecologic clean fuels. Nano-structured catalysts for production of hydrogen from renewable sources by reforming of bio-gas and bio-ethanol or by conversion of carbon oxide with water vapor (WGS), followed by selective oxidation of residual СО (PROX). Novel oxidation processes with the use of ozone are elaborated for the needs of ecology, chemical industry, medicine pharmacy etc.

IC will participate in CC HITMOBIL with the laboratory on “Novel heterogeneous catalysts for clean energy and environment protection” where the highly qualified staff has experience and tradition in the synthesis of new catalytic materials (carrier and catalysts) for the production of pure hydrogen from natural gas and renewable stuff, resulting in a large number of scientific publication and citations and participation in international scientific projects.

IC educates diploma and doctor fellows from the country and abroad. Projects are elaborated with NSF, Framework Programs, NATO, UNIDO, UNESCO etc.
