HITMOBIL Competence Centre Introduced Hydrogen Technologies to Students in Vratsa

High school students and teachers from two schools in Vratsa gained first-hand insights into the opportunities offered by hydrogen energy and sustainable mobility

On 8 June 2026, experts from the HITMOBIL Competence Centre presented the latest trends in hydrogen technologies and their applications in the energy and transport sectors to nearly 70 students and teachers.

The event was organized by the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems (IEES-BAS) within the framework of the Green Skills for Hydrogen project, with the support of the HITMOBIL Competence Centre and the Regional Department of Education – Vratsa.

Assoc. Prof. Galin Borisov, PhD, Head of Laboratory 3 “Hydrogen and Fuel Cells”, introduced participants to the potential of hydrogen as a key element of the energy transition, the technologies used for its production, the different types of modern hydrogen energy conversion systems, and their operating principles.

Assoc. Prof. Blagoy Burdin, PhD, Head of Field Laboratory 6 “Integrated Energy Systems”, presented the design and operating principles of fuel cell electric vehicles and highlighted the role of hydrogen as a sustainable transport fuel.

The highlight of the educational programme was the demonstration of the first hydrogen-powered electric vehicle officially registered in Bulgaria, which is part of the demonstration infrastructure of the HITMOBIL Competence Centre. Students had the opportunity to examine the vehicle up close, learn about its design and technical specifications, and gain a better understanding of the advantages of hydrogen mobility.

Through initiatives such as this, the HITMOBIL Competence Centre actively contributes to raising awareness of hydrogen technologies among young people and to building the knowledge and skills needed for the future development of the green economy and sustainable transport in Bulgaria.
