Assoc.Prof. Dr. Blagoy Burdin Presented a Vision for the Development of Sustainable Mobility in Europe at Green Transition Forum 2026
The HITMOBIL Competence Centre expert highlighted the role of hydrogen technologies in sustainable transport and Europe’s green transition.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Blagoy Burdin, an expert at the HITMOBIL Competence Centre and senior researcher at the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems "Acad. Evgeni Budevski" at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IEES-BAS), took part in the panel discussion “Electrification of Mobility – Where Are We and Where Are We Going?” held on the opening day of Green Transition Forum 6.0: Europe's Next Chapter, which took place from 1 to 5 June 2026 at the Sofia Event Center.
The forum annually brings together representatives of industry, academia, public institutions and professional organisations from across Europe to discuss key aspects of the green transition. This year’s edition was officially opened by the Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria, H.E. Iliana Iotova.
As the only representative of the scientific community on the panel, Dr. Burdin presented his perspective on the future development of electric and hydrogen mobility in Europe, with a particular focus on the Southeast European region. He emphasised the role of hydrogen as a strategic technology for achieving the European Union’s climate goals and as an essential component of the accelerated deployment of innovative solutions for transport decarbonisation.
He strongly underlined the need to develop infrastructure for hydrogen production, storage and refuelling in order to enable the wider adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles. According to Dr. Burdin, a successful transition to sustainable mobility requires a balanced combination of technological solutions, including battery electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells, depending on the specific requirements of different transport applications.
The discussion also featured representatives of leading companies and organisations from the automotive sector, electric mobility industry and institutions involved in shaping European sustainable transport policies. Participants shared the view that Europe must accelerate the development of the sector in order to maintain its competitiveness against global leaders in emerging transport technologies. The panel was moderated by Petar Georgiev, Chair of a committee at ChargeUp Europe and Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Ampeco.
