Assoc. Prof. Blagoy Burdin with an expert opinion on Radio Plovdiv – BNR

For an expert opinion on the draft Law on Electric Mobility, Radio Plovdiv invited Assoc. Prof. Blagoy Burdin from the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems at BAS on September 30, 2025.

Assoc. Prof. Burdin, who heads the Field Laboratory “Integrated Energy Systems” at CoC HITMOBIL, expressed his own and his colleagues’ view from the scientific and professional community that electric vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells should also benefit from the supportive measures under the proposed Law on Electric Mobility.

“The two main types of electric vehicles are – battery-powered and hydrogen fuel cell-powered. The advantage of the hydrogen vehicle is that it can be refueled much faster, within only 5–6 minutes, after which you can drive between 500 and 700 km. Here as well, there are no carbon dioxide emissions or release of toxic substances while driving,” emphasized Assoc. Prof. Burdin.

Hydrogen electric vehicles are the cars of the future, believes the expert, who drives the first registered car of this type in the country and is also head of the first hydrogen refueling station in Bulgaria.

“As of today, there are 8–9 fuel cell electric vehicles in the country, mainly used in Sofia. But hydrogen electromobility is gradually advancing. Of course, the critical issue here is the charging (refueling) infrastructure for them,” he stated.

The specialist called for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles to be included in the Law on Electric Mobility as part of the general category of electric vehicles, thereby encouraging their use and supporting the development of hydrogen refueling infrastructure in the country.
